Robot Child plays tasty progressive rock influenced music with a splash of jazz and classical.
Featuring Waleed Aly, Jeff Wortman, Marty Holt, Dan Slater and Russell Hodges, the band often find themselves in interesting situations - such as being the house band for
The Chaser at the 2011 and 2012 Sydney Writer's festivals.
Robot Child are just as comfortable rocking out at The Espy, Revolver, or The Annandale, as they are in more grandiose settings like the Melbourne Town Hall or Spiegeltent.
"Space" appears on the
Just Music charity album, also featuring Paul Kelly, Clare Bowditch, Dan Sultan, Jesse & Ella Hooper, Xavier Rudd and others.
Keep your eyes and ears open for their debut album in 2013...
"Super talented and charismatic… rule breaking rock" - Inpress
May 20 2013: It has been a long time since updates, but we are still quite active behind the scenes! Our album is fully recorded and was mixed by the amazing
Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Butterfly Effect). And while we can't wait for you to hear it, we are currently planning, designing and filming a bunch of different things for the lead up to its release. Stay tuned on
facebook and
twitter for more.
June 26 2012: Our shows in Sydney with The Chaser were again a roaring success but we are taking a short break from the live scene to mix our album which is now fully tracked! In the meantime, there are some fun photos and vidoes to see on our
Facebook page if you
like these things...
May 15 2012: Since the last update we have done a few really fun shows, including Revolover, John Curtain band room and even Wesley College! But we are extremely excited about our gigs in Sydney this weekend: Two with The Chaser at the
SWF, and one at the
Annandale on Sunday. Bring it on! Join us on
Facebook and
Twitter for photos and videos.
March 30 2012: Spiegeltent was a massive success! Next gig is April 19 @
Revolver, with Clock Towers and Saving Cleopatra. The Chaser have also asked us back to Sydney for some shows in May, and there are a few other gigs currently being negotiated. Album tracking is nearly finished and we can't wait to let you hear it!
March 1 2012: The
Just Music charity album we've contributed to is now available, with the official launch taking place at
The Spiegeltent this Sunday 4th March. Some really great tracks on there, particularly Clare Bowditch's! And as far as our full length debut goes, Waleed is doing double shifts to finish off guitar tracking, with pianos being recorded at Sing Sing this week.
So it's definitely all happening!
Dec 10 2011: We've just booked into Tom (Shihad) Larkin's
Studios in the City to start recording our debut album in January! Ben Ehrenberg is producing, and we can't wait to get in there. Last gig for the year is 23rd December @
The Empress Hotel (Fitzroy).
Nov 16 2011: Our previously mentioned recording is at mixing stage and needless to say, we're super excited about the shape it's taking! We've also been writing a bunch of new songs that may well find their way onto our debut album, and will surely be road tested at our monster Christmas gig @
The Empress Hotel (Fitzroy). Supports on the night will be from the mighty Technodrome and Polygasm.
Oct 19 2011: It's on again - your chance to be on a CD featuring Clare Bowditch, Paul Kelly and Blue King Brown and your favs, Robot Child! Come to ABC Southbank THIS SUNDAY at 2pm to sing as part of the crowd backing vocals for Robot Child's song for the upcoming compilation album. Average singers welcome. We'd love to see all of you there!
Oct 2 2011: We began recording today at the
Triple J studios for an upcoming compilation CD. The legendary
Chris Thompson is at the desk, and it's all sounding great! More details will be posted when release dates are figured out etc. In other news, Russell Hodges (who played keys for our Chaser shows) has taken over full time from Jonny Palmer, who has decided move on. Rusty has brought along some great new songs and a new energy which we are looking forward to showing you all soon.
May 20 2011: Our Sydney shows with
The Chaser were a resounding success, and, well who knows what may happen from there... but in the mean time we have a show this Thursday night @
Ruby's Lounge. It would be great to see some of you there! Other bands playing are Strangers From Now On, The Upstanding Members and Dusted Orange. $10 at the door from 8:30-11:30pm.
May 9 2011: On Saturday night we played live to air on
RRR, and last night we were featured on
JJJ with John Safran - all mixed in with interviews about Osama and Queen. We've also done a bit more recording, and preparation for next week's
Chaser gigs.
April 2 2011: We can finally announce that we are the house band for
The Chaser’s Empty Vessel @ The Sydney Writers Festival for 3 shows in May!!!
Mar 23 2011: A couple of gigs to plug -
Espy on Wed March 30 (which I believe is being filmed) and
Ding Dong on Friday April 8. Both shows serve as a warm up for some really special stuff we're doing in Sydney in May... but you'll have to wait to hear about that! We're also playing Ruby's in Belgrave on May 26 with some other really cool bands. Come see us soon, and also review or vote for us on our new
JJJ Unearthed page.
Mar 11 2011: The fully mastered demos of Blissfully Unaware and Crucifixation have been added to the mp3 player above - have a listen! We will be announcing some very special gigs soon, but in the mean time, come rock with us @ Ding Dong in Melbourne on April 8. Check the facebook event for more details.
Jan 08 2011: More pre-production recording today. The album concept is starting to take shape, and plans for some very exciting events (and a new website) are well under way. Waleed's TV show "
The Late Session" is currently screening on SBS, or you can watch episodes online.
Dec 31 2010: We ended the year with some great gigs at Revolver w/Sons of Messengers + Doc Viney, and at Grace Darling w/The Triangles + Vicuna Coat. Both were really well received, and a good chance to road test some new songs. We also started pre-production for our debut album. A recent demo of Free Running is in the mp3 player to tie you over.
